I was called here to First Presbyterian Church, Baker City to lead worship, celebrate the sacraments, and perform pastoral visits. I find visiting people in hospitals and their homes a privilege. When I know people's current theological concerns, I find it easier to write engaging sermons.
The Presbyterian church has a long history of emphasizing education for its clergy as well as its lay leaders. I value translating scriptures from Hebrew and Greek, and comparing Bible verses with other ancient near eastern texts. I resonate with the phrase "When I pray, I talk to God, and when I study, God talks to me." I share what I have learned with the congregation. I appreciate hearing other people's interpretations, and with their permission, include them in my sermons. Sometimes the Sunday worship leader assists me in delivering the sermon. The congregation benefits from hearing another voice.
I prefer lively interactive worship. The prayers we say together, the hymns we sing, the anthems we hear, and the banners we see all work together to proclaim the word of God. The Children's Time is an integral part of the sermon. The children and I have demonstrated sealing a scroll with wax, poured hot water on dry ice, distributed books to the congregation, and blessed our Sunday School teachers. I include my sermons on this website with some reservations. Sermons are meant to be heard, not read silently. I write my sermons for this congregation for a particular Sunday, sometimes in answer to a particular question posed by a member, or in response to a local, national, or international event. I hope as you read these sermons you will appreciate being able to ‘overhear' God's word to this church.
I continue to learn how to serve our savior Jesus Christ. I struggle with how to be a good steward of God's blessings. I listen for the prompting of the Holy Spirit in my life. I value praying with people, and am grateful to know people are praying for me.
I appreciate the Presbyterian practice of organizing lay leaders to administer the work of the church. Committees (people meeting to pray together, organize events, and welcome people) are vital to the life of the church.
I hope this web site gives you a feel for our church community. I hope after you visit us virtually you will want to visit us physically.
