The primary purpose of this position is to organize, plan, direct, and administer the high school and middle school ministry for First Presbyterian Church of Baker City, Oregon. The Youth Director will help youth to grow in the Christian faith and develop the skills and knowledge needed to become mature Christian adults through Bible study, participation in worship and service to the church and community. In addition this position will coordinate outreach and mission opportunities.
This position is accountable to the Pastor, as Head of Staff and the position's supervisor, and to the Session through the Christian Education Committee.
1. To personally maintain a healthy spiritual and devotional life through a continuing relationship with Jesus Christ.
2. Design and implement a weekly pattern of programs that provide for fellowship, discipleship, nurture, and evangelistic outreach for high school and middle school youth. These should include:
a. Mid-week youth activity year round for middle school and high school.
b. Plan, organize, and direct small group Bible study for the high school and middle school students.
c. Sunday School director/teacher
3. Include an outreach emphasis to non-churched youth in the wider community.
4. Direct Vacation Bible School during the summer.
5. Provide and encourage periodic mission and outreach opportunities for the church, both youth and adults.
6. Organize and lead youth and/or adult mission events.
7. Coordinate Young Families events.
8. Function and work cooperatively with members of the church staff.
a. Coordinate calendar and schedules with Christian Education Committee, church secretary and pastor.
b. Provide secretary with website updates.
c. Write monthly newsletter articles about youth.
d. Communicate electronically and/or by snail mail with youth regarding schedules.
9. Attend worship.
10. Administer Safe Church Policy guidelines for Youth Ministry.
11. Invite and involve adult volunteers to help.
12. Will be guided by the polity and theology of the Presbyterian Church (USA).
13. If qualified, direct Folk Choir and/or Children's Choir.
14. If qualified, fill in for pulpit supply.
1. A baccalaureate degree.
2. Evidence of a deep and growing faith in Jesus Christ.
3. Recognize the values associated being part of a Church family and demonstrates a love for all God's people.
4. A love for young people, a capacity to communicate and relate the Good News to young people and a vision for nurturing the spiritual growth of middle and high school youth.
5. Demonstration through life choices of a commitment to the safety and well being of youth.
6. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with volunteers, pastors and other staff.
7. Basic vocal/guitar/piano skills a plus.
8. Successful completion of a background check.
